John Michael Torno
Originally from the Phillipines and being a work permit holder, John Michael Torno moved to Taber from Calgary in September 2022, after he visited the town during its community-favoured Taber Cornfest. He traveled with his family to the town and met with friends, and soon after, Taber became Torno’s new home.
“People are very hospitable and kind in Taber. While sightseeing during the festival, people would greet me and smile. I never felt like I was a visitor,” says Torno. “I am from a small community in the Philippines with the same ambiance. I feel very comfortable living in a small and growing community like Taber, and there is also a large Filipino community here as well.”
When he saw an available position in the food service industry while he was in town, he applied and was hired by the employer. Torno says he’s loved the small community more each day.
During his time in Taber, he’s felt a large amount of support from his employer and the Town of Taber in helping him apply for the Rural Renewal Stream, a provincial initiative to welcome newcomers and help them find employment and settle in Canada permanently.
“I am really thankful to my employer Tollcorp Restaurants, especially to Ma’am Sarah, and also to the people behind the Town of Taber. I never had a hard time finishing the Rural Renewal Stream process. Everything has been easy so far, and everyone is so accommodating in regards to my questions. I like living here. It’s peaceful and quiet. I already had countless nights of good rest. People are very friendly here. It’s a lovely place to live in,” says Torno.
In his spare time, Torno plays badminton and basketball at the recreation centres, with locals he’s met throughout his time in Taber. There is a large Filipino community in the town that Torno has gotten to know and connect with quickly. He says for those who are planning to move, Taber has a peaceful environment, and people are very welcoming.
“Taber is a place to raise a family. It’s a small town, and yet, it has many businesses and amenities. You can live in a small community, and you can still have fun and get everything you need. It is also located near big cities and the U.S. Border. If you ever wish to spend your day shopping or wandering, you could without much effort. I’ve lived in a big city, and small communities like Taber give you a peace of mind with no worries. You also feel you’re safe and secure because of the goodwill of the people,” says Torno.
“You’re not going to feel homesick at all when you stay in Taber. It is really a place to grow.”
